Neon Open is an open source AI platform that includes a convolutional deep neural network trained on the world’s largest and most comprehensive dataset that quantifies emotional responses to images operating out of the Viscog Research group at Carnegie Mellon University.
Neon was co-founded by Sophie Lebrecht and Michael J. Tarr in 2012 to help organizations with billions of raw images and video automatically scan through their content to select the most engaging images and video clips. In an effort to broaden distribution, the platform was released to the open source community in 2017 via the BSD 2-Clause license. Neon’s emotional image AI platform is now core to a number of leading media and advertising platforms, as well as research labs, and nonprofits that handle large amounts of images and video.

We are committed to building the most advanced model of human vision together.
Visual intelligence has made giant leaps in the areas of object detection and scene recognition, yet to build a complete model of human perception we must train networks on higher-level representations, such as emotion. This is why we are opening our dataset, models, and methods.
